Wednesday 10th September – Walk Le Crotoy a.m. ***** Bike Poses, river Seine p.m. *****

We did our exercises on the beach watching the tractors collecting the shellfish from the Baie de Somme way out across the low tide. It is a beautiful blue sky morning:) Picked some blackberries to go with our porridge for breakfast then decided to go for a walk out across the baie. There was a group of walkers out there having a guided tour and also a horse and cart. We had to pick our way across the sandy mud and little riverlets but it wasn’t as hard as we thought it would be. We really enjoyed it and were glad we stayed a bit longer. We saw some black things way out across the sand, a lot further than we walked and when we looked through binoculars they were seals! About 20 huge ones and babies just laying on a sand dune trying to put off moving till the last minute! We returned to the beach and could see the tide had turned and was following us pretty quickly but the seals were still hanging on. Back to the van along the path through the pine woods we found yesterday. Packed up and finally left Le Crotoy at about 12.30. Headed for the motorway at Abbeville and travelled down to Rouen. Stopped at Pont d L’Arche for our usual lunch spot and after sitting in our chairs, eating and reading decided we had done enough miles for today (about 100) and looked for somewhere nearby. I had seen a Lock on the River Seine marked on our map so we headed for that. It wasn’t very far at all but we have never explored further than Pont d L’Arche even though we have been here a lot. We stopped at a bird hide at Grand Noe before finding Poses, a lovely little village on the Seine. There is a barrage and a lock on the river here. We parked up and quickly got the bikes off. Crossed the barrage and lock first to have a look over there then returned and headed off on the path along the Seine. Past the tourist information which amazingly was still open at 5.20! and got a pack on walks and bike routes in the area. We decided to carry on the way we were going and do a circular route which took us further along the seine, round past the bird hide at Grand Noe and along the river L’Eure (which Pont d L’Arche is on) then round the huge Lac Des Deux Amants. The whole thing was 15km on cycle tracks, footpaths, through woodland tracks and river banks, roads (the only busy one was a wrong turning!) and through the grounds of the Base de Loisiers at the lac. We did it in about 2 ½ hours. Back to the van for tea and staying here tonight – a great day:)

Thursday 11th September - travelling and walk

We had a bit of a lie in and Mag went for a walk over the barrage and locks – there were two huge barges going towards Rouen. After breakfast we set off and drove on free motorways and green roads to Orleans then on to Briare le Canal on the River Loire, where we have stayed before. It is such a beautiful little town with lots and lots of flowers and canals everywhere! We got our favourite parking place between one of the canals and a small river opposite the Lavoire – an ancient washhouse. We had a very late lunch at 3.30 then read and dozed in the sun. I picked half a carrier bag of hazelnuts from the bridge just by the van:) About 6 we went for a long walk around the various canals and had a look at the aquaduct just as a small boat was coming along it. Saw a kingfisher and a coypu. Back to the van after about an hour and a quarter and had Carbonara for tea. There is a funny little cat here – he is a Siamese who keeps his tongue out all the time! He has incredible blue eyes but we think no teeth!!
